A lot of people misunderstand lab-grown diamonds, thinking they’re “fake.” Let’s set the record straight with science, industry standards, and gemological lab conclusions: Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds are identical in nature—their only difference is where they come from.

Chemically speaking: Both are pure carbon crystals with the exact same molecular structure.

Physically: They share a Mohs hardness of 10, identical refractive index, dispersion, and specific gravity—you can’t tell them apart by sparkle or luster with the naked eye.

Gemological standards: Top international labs like GIA and IGI officially classify lab-grown diamonds as real diamonds; they only require labeling as “lab-grown” to distinguish their origin.

The differences between the two boil down to three points—none of which relate to their core nature:

Birthplace: Natural diamonds form deep in the Earth over billions of years under extreme heat and pressure; lab-grown diamonds are cultivated in labs via HPHT or CVD technology in just a few weeks.

Inclusions: Natural diamonds often contain mineral inclusions; lab-grown diamonds are typically purer, with growth patterns detectable only by specialized equipment.

Price: Lab-grown diamonds offer far better value, while natural diamonds carry a scarcity premium for collectors.
